Asami Nagakiya's body was found on February 10th, 2016. She was found under a tree in the Queen's Park Savannah on Ash Wednesday, still in her Carnival costume from the day before. Forensics confirmed she was strangled to death.

Asami was a Japanese national who professionally taught and played the steelpan, visiting Trinidad frequently to play Carnival and the instrument she loved.

The now-former Mayor of our capital, Raymond Tim Kee, commented on her death days after. He claimed

"The woman has the responsibility to ensure that they are not abused"
