The Lovers. 2018. sterling silver, stainless steel.

In Trinidad & Tobago, as in many parts of the world, the LGBTQ community is heavily chastised. Homosexual men and the trans community especially are targets, as Trinidad suffers from an unhealthy South American dose of machismo. What only adds fuel to this is the Catholic mantra that homosexuality is against God and abnormal. “Gay” has become a casual and natural term synonymous with the negative; thrown around to describe any small inconvenience. The Lovers is my response to this aspect of Trinidadian culture. It takes the idea that homosexuality is unholy, and the context is turned onto this corrupt idea, depicting two men being crucified for their sexuality; their intimacy shown by their holding hands. They mistreat a whole group of people the same way their saviour was.
